Correct lanes on roundabouts
ALWAYS look for signs, and road markings, in advance, when approaching a roundabout so you can clearly see in plenty of time which lane you need to use.
Which lane do you use when approaching a roundabout?
Think of it this way, which side of the road do we drive on in the UK? The left of course. So when approaching a roundabout, if you’re going straight on or turning left then you use the lefthand lane unless signs or road markings tell you otherwise.
If you’re turning right, then you must use the righthand lane, unless signs or road markings tell you otherwise.
So what do we mean about signs or road markings telling us otherwise?
If there is more than one lane shown for the route you want to take, then you take the lefthandmost one of the ones available. This means that if you want to turn right and there are TWO lanes marked for turning right with arrows or a sign, then you take the LEFT of the two. Remember we drive on the left. The reason for this is that there may be a dual carriageway or a one-way system in the road you are entering, and because we drive on the left, and you’re not turning right in that road, you need to be on the left hand lane. By selecting the lefthand most lane of the two available you will be in the correct lane when you exit the roundabout.
Your examiner will not tell you which lane to use when on your driving test, it is up to you to see and plan in advance which lane you need to use.
Be VERY VERY careful when switching lanes to the left to exit a roundabout, other traffic may have moved over to your intended lane earlier than you and could be approaching on your left in your blindspot. Make sure you check over your left shoulder before moving across to the left to exit the roundabout. It might not be safe to move over and you might need to plan how to deal with other traffic. If necessary stay in your lane until it is SAFE to move to the left hand lane. Always use your MSM (Mirror, Signal, Manouevre) routine when changing lanes.
