Mirrors!
So many people will fail their driving test for incorrect use of mirrors. Hopefully your instructor will have fully explained the use of MSPSL - Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed, Look. Why do you think it's so important? Well, ask yourself this. When leaving the house in the morning do you first look out of the window and see if it's raining, then tell everyone you're going out, and then proceed with going out (after putting on your coat if it is raining) ? Guess what, that's what we do when we're driving. We first assess the situation by checking the relevant mirrors. Then we tell everyone what we're going to do by signalling if necessary, then we carry out the move using the information we have gleaned from checking.
If we are heading towards a situation where we might need to change our speed, then we need to know what's coming up behind us so we check our rear view mirror. Call it the speed mirror. Otherwise we risk getting hit from behind.
If we might soon need to turn the steering wheel either to the right or the left, then we need to know if anything is approaching from behind in that direction e.g. a cyclist or a motorbike or a police car chasing someone, or anything else for that matter. So we check our right or left mirrors accordingly. Call them our direction mirrors.
Don't leave the mirror check until you are actually carrying out the move, it's too late then to deal with the big truck that's sliding towards you jackknifed, or the police car overtaking you, or the fire engine rushing past you, or the cyclist riding alongside you. If you didn't have time to check the mirrors, then you weren't looking far enough ahead. Or you were going too fast around the corner.
