Moving away safely
Prepare
Make sure you have your feet ready (set your gas, find the biting point, hand on the handbrake). Your instructor will show you and help you with this. On most cars, the biting point is about 3 cm up from the floor. Get used to finding this quickly as the longer you take to find it the harder it is. When you find your biting point quickly you will feel it in your seat and hear a little clunk sound. If the car is dragging on the handbrake or trying to pull forwards then you have your clutch up too high.
Observe
Your instructor will demonstrate the blindspots, that area which you cannot see in your mirrors. So as well as checking all your mirrors, and the road ahead, you MUST check those blindspots. If the road you are in has a bend behind you, or there are parked cars behind you, then think where you might see something only when it’s too late?
If you can see another road user coming behind you then ask yourself this, can I pull out and speed up without causing that person to have to slow down? If the answer is no, then it isn’t safe to go. It doesn’t matter if the other person is breaking the speed limit, it’s YOUR job to move away safely without causing another road user to have to slow down. You wouldn't pull away with an ambulance racing up behind you, would you? Well you shouldn't pull away with a BMW doing 40 in a 30 limit either.
Move
Once you decided it’s safe and sensible to go, then think if a signal is needed, and go go go. Check your mirror again to see if you need to speed up.
If you stalled it, then read this.
