Save upto £250 a year on your fuel bill
By following these tips you could save upto around £250 per year on your fuel bill, and help the environment at the same time by reducing your driving carbon footprint.
- Drive smoothly by reading the road ahead and avoiding harsh braking or accelerating
- Use the deccelerator instead of the brake (separate tip)
- Ensure your tyres are inflated correctly
- In the correct gear going down a hill you should rarely need to either accelerate nor brake
- Use the highest gear available whilst still having enough power. Your revs should be within 1000rpm and 3000rpm (maximum)
- Often a slight lifting of the gas pedal will retain current speed but use less fuel
- Be frugal with the electrical items used such as air-conditioning, stereo, sat-nav, etc
- Turn off the engine when waiting for a long time e.g. in a roadworks queue
- Don't bother speeding up and then braking in-between speed humps, save your brake pads as well as your fuel
- Keep aerodynamic efficiency by keeping your windows closed
- Limit the weight being carried in your car - time to clean out the boot and glovebox!
- Avoid unnecessary use of the car by walking if it's only a short distance (school run?!) and keep fit
- If your car has an econo-meter or fuel monitor, pay attention to it
- Driving up a hill, do not try to remain at the speed limit (there is a balance between economy and making progress)
- Keep within the speed limits - why waste fuel and risk causing more death on the roads at the same time?
The above savings are based on the average driver doing 12,000 miles per year at an average of 33 miles per gallon at 2008 fuel prices, following the above tips which will help save from 10-15% on your fuel bill.
