A skill for life not just your driving test

Eyesight check

Before starting to learn to drive, and again on your driving test, you will be asked to read a number plate at 20.5m in order to check that your eyesight is good enough to drive a car. If you need glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision then you MUST wear these at all times when driving.

Your instructor and your examiner will ask you to read the number plate of a car, in good daylight where possible, at approximately 20.5m (67 feet). This is about 5 car lengths away. For the modern, smaller, number plates a distance of 20m is required. The first attempt will be done by "eye". If you fail to read the number plate then the instructor or examiner will use a tape measure to accurately measure the distance. If you still fail to read the number plate then you may be asked once more to read another, and then after still failing you will be unable to continue with your driving lessons or test due to failure of the eyesight test.

In order to continue you must visit an optician. He/she will then provide you with a prescription for you to get the glasses/contact lenses that you require in order to be able to drive legally.

So before your first driving lesson, go out into your road, pick a car unfamiliar to you, and ensure you can read its number plate from about 5 car lengths away. Don't try and cheat by reading the number plate before you are the correct distance away from it.

Good eyesightYour eyesight should be checked every 6 months by performing the same check. If you have been having lessons for more than 6 months then expect your instructor to check your eyesight again.
