Learning to drive
You may apply for your provisional licence when you are still 16 years old, but it will not be valid until your 17th birthday. The application process may take up to 2 weeks so please ensure you have received your licence before the date of your first driving lesson. Your driving instructor will ask to see your provisional licence on your first lesson. The licence consists of both a photocard and a paper counterpart. It is important you keep both parts safely and do not lose them.
Most driving schools are quite busy, especially in spring and summer, so you may need to book your driving lessons about 4-6 weeks in advance. The Go School Of Motoring has a fully online secure booking system so you can just click to book.
If you need glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision then these must be worn at all times when driving. To see if your eyesight is ok you need to be able to read a standard vehicle registration plate in good daylight at 20.5m (20m for new style plates). This is roughly 5 car lengths, so go ahead and try it - walk down your street, or another street, and try to find an unfamilar car that is about 5 car lengths away. If you can read the number plate easily then your eyesight is good enough.
Your driving instructor will teach to how to drive at your pace of learning. We will structure your lessons around you. Each lesson will be structured and according to the DSA syllabus. Each new skill will be introduced when you are ready for it, and existing skills will always be practised and developed. Your first few lessons will be on quiet back roads with little or no traffic to enable you to grasp the essential controls without having to worry about anything else.
You need to ensure that you are studying for and preparing for your theory test during the first few lessons. If you delay it you will not be able to book your driving test until you have passed your theory test.
You will be given a record of your progress for you to keep and it will be updated after each lesson so you can see what you have learned so far, how close to test standard you are, and what new skills lie ahead! And you will of course be wanting to plan for your Pass Plus course to give you that edge over other recently passed drivers and also save money on your car insurance.
